Passion of my life
Since I am back to blogging after quite some time, I want to write about something that I am really very passionate about. Most of the people who know me well will understand that one thing that I am extremely passionate about is Music. It's one thing that really turns me on. Whether when I am driving or when I am bathing or when I am just lazing around, you will find me humming a song.

I like different kinds of music. I can classify music as per my liking as follows:
- Happy-go-lucky music:
These are usually those peppy numbers that remind you of your college days & all the naughty stuff you have done and puts a smile on your face. These songs usually have a catchy tune (though nothing exceptional) and really cool n' cute lyrics. Some of the songs that fall into this category are:
- Purani Jeans (Ali Haider)
- Summer of 69 (Bryan Adams)
- Nadia (Anonymous)
You can enjoy this type of music the most, when you are with your friends. Sit around the bon fire and sing these songs all together with somebody playing the guitar(in our case it has to be Rajit!). Thatz a great way to spend some quality time with your friends.

- Soulful music:
You enjoy this kind of music the most when you are all alone, sitting near the window and watching the rain outside. Or more ideally when you are taking a stroll at the Coaker's walk in Kodaikanal. This kind of music rejuvenates your soul. Really touches you in a very gentle & subtle manner. Its very hard to express what you feel when you listen to this kind of music. Some of the songs which are my picks in this category are:
- Brothers in Arms (Dire Straits)
- All Norah Jones songs ( I love that ladies voice. I need another post to describe my affection for the lady - I know Rajit will not share the same opinion though!)
- Some of Yanni's/Kenny G's compositions.
- Aaj jaane ki zid na karo (I don't know who is the singer, Rajit introduced me to this song.Ever since I am in love with this song)
- Some of Jagjit Singh's songs
- Yellow (Coldplay)
- Some Spiritual songs (all spiritual songs don't appeal to me, I find many of them very cliched)

- Volatile Music:
This kinda music usually has a very catchy tune. It appeals to you when you hear it for the first time in a restaurant or at a friend's party. Or more often than not, when you hear this song being played on TV/Radio 20 times a day. It kind of makes an impression on your mind. But the problem with this category of music is that it doesn't make a lasting impression on your mind and it fails to connect to your soul. When you try to recall this type of music after a while, you realise that you can't remember the song no matter how hard you try. Even if you do remember, you feel that you don't like the song as much as you used to like it earlier. Its because this category of music has very mediocre music with some cliched lyrics. Examples of this category:
- Most of the Bollywood songs (usually these songs have lyrics like "Meri neend gaya, chain gaya or tune mere dil le liya or chaand hain aasman mein. I don't understand where else can the ****ing chand be! But thatz how our Bollywood lyircists are).
- Songs by Backstreet Boys and other Boy bands / Britney Spears / And most of those Afro-American hip-hop bands.

- Romantic music:
This category as the name suggests is the most dreaded one. This kind of music can invoke a certain type of feelings for a special someone. As they say, there is a song for every season and every reason. In fact, love and music are almost synonymous. I guess true love is like good music. Keeps growing on you and touches your soul. I still remember when I was in school/college, whenever I had a crush on some pretty lass I could relate my feelings with a certain piece of music. Sometimes it was the music and sometimes the lyrics which did the trick. If in school it was Bollywood film music like Aashiqui (I used to feel that my heart beat has increased when I used to listen to the song "Dheere Dheere se mere zindagi main aana"). Then in pre-university days it was Bryan Adams, MLTR, Stevie Wonder, Lionel Richie etc. I used to feel that all these songs were written just for me. During engineering days, it was Jagjit Singh, Celine Dion, Shania Twain etc(especially that "Pyar ka pahla khat likhne me waqt to lagta hain" as it was quite my situation then). I wonder what kind of music would make me romantic now. I guess it would be something like the "Love Story" theme music or any good instrumental music. There is another sub-category in this: music which can act as an aphrodisiac, but I guess that is beyond the scope of this post!

Energy-filled music:
This kind of music gives you an adrenaline rush. It can both lead to both constructive as well as destructive mental setup. There can be songs which make you feel very energetic and pump you up. This can be very motivational. Patriotic songs as well as songs like "Danger Zone" in Top Gun and the title song of "Dum" fall in this category. Then there are other types of music which express anguish, fear, frustration, sadistic pleasures, agony, pain etc. Songs by Nirvana, Metallica, Black Sabbath are usually about these issues. Rock music is neverthless very appealing. If one can ignore the lyrics (as Rajit advocates me to) and just enjoy the energy the music generates, it is amazing. But if you are of the type, who gives a lot of weightage to the lyrics, then lyrics like "Die, Die my darling", "Smells like teen spirit", "Fear of the dark", might prompt you to seriously doubt the listener's mental health!

Music, according to me, symbolises life and is truly an embodiment of all that is there in this universe.
